Cordless Power for Garden Machinery

Cordless Power With Makita Garden Machinery Products

Ongoing developments at Makita in battery-powered cordless garden machinery has meant that these machines now offer a genuine alternative to petrol and corded tools for garden or grounds maintenance professionals.

Why should you think about going cordless with Makita?

Cordless products share many of the same advantages as petrol powered tools in terms of flexibility, ease of working and safety. By eliminating the need for mains power in the area you are working means that tasks can be completed quicker and easier. The absence of power cables also means that a potential trip hazard is removed, both for the user and anyone in the area. It also eliminates the dangers associated with the cable snagging or coming into contact with the blade or moving parts of the machine. For users this means there is one less factor they need to manage when planning and carrying out their work.

However, cordless tools also offer other benefits. They are often quieter and produce lower levels of vibration – both of which help to protect the user from the negative effects of prolonged or frequent exposure to noise and vibration. There is of course, no need to handle or transport fuels and as such removes the potential dangers associated with that. Cordless tools are also cheaper to run than petrol alternatives and offer the additional benefit of zero emissions. The cost of running a two stroke or four stroke machine is typically 7 and 14 times higher respectively compared with the cost of charging the battery to do the same work. While improvements have been made to make petrol machines easier to start, the nature of cordless products mean that they can be activated instantly at the push of a button.

Advances in battery powered technology and tools

In the past, battery powered machines could not always deliver the power and run times required by some garden and grounds professionals. While certain tasks will require the higher capacities offered by larger petrol engines, developments in the tool and battery technologies mean that cordless products can be used for most maintenance jobs. For example, Makita’s lithium-ion battery technology (LXT), delivers far longer run times and shorter charge times than previous generations of battery. An 18-volt 3 amp-hour (Ah) LXT battery can be fully charged in as little as 22 minutes and even a 6.0Ah battery will need only 55 minutes to be completely recharged.

Lithium-ion also has the advantage of allowing the battery to be recharged from any charge level without damaging the life of the battery. They also do not discharge if stored for an extended period of time – meaning the battery is always ready to use.

Alongside advances in the batteries are the improvements in the technologies within the machines. For example, brushless motors improve the efficiency by significantly reducing the friction within the motor that causes energy to be wasted as heat. Makita’s brushless motors also produce more torque per weight, which means less power is required to achieve the same result, extending run times by between 30% and 50% on each battery charge.

How versatile are Makita cordless powered machines?

Finally, one of the key advantages of modern cordless systems is the ability to easily switch the batteries between different machines depending on the requirements of the job. Cordless lawnmowers, blowers, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, line trimmers and split-shaft multitools are all available and the same batteries can be used to power each as required.

However, when purchasing new products, it is important to ensure that all batteries and tools are compatible. Our 18v LXT platform allows the same batteries to be used on a wide range of tools and machines and our Twin 18v technology delivers 36v power by utilising two 18v LXT batteries. This compatibility also means that garden and grounds maintenance teams can also use the batteries to power other tools that might be required in the course of their work such as versatile drill-drivers, screwdrivers or saws.
